Youth Equine Champions Day planned for February in Atlanta

A herd of young equestrians will meet in Atlanta on February 10 for the second annual Youth Equine Champions Day.

The event will honor young people (19 and under) who qualified and participated in regional, national and world championship horse shows as well as Georgia State Champions. Georgia State Champions include all first-place winners in the Pony, 1-12 and 13-19 age groups from the Georgia Federation State Show.

Youth Equine Champions Day will begin at 10 a.m., Feb. 10, at the historic railroad Freight Depot at 65 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta. The Georgia Equine Commodity Commission is sponsoring the event.

Governor Perdue Issues Writ of Election for State House Seat

Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that he has issued a writ of special election to fill the vacancy of House District 19 due to the resignation of Rep. Glenn Richardson. Rep. Richardson submitted his letter this morning with an effective date of today, January 11.

The special election to fill the vacancy will be held February 23, 2010.

Qualifying dates will be set by the Secretary of State’s office. Below is the writ of election:

House District 19 has become vacant due to the resignation of Representative Glenn Richardson.

Therefore, pursuant to Article V, Section II, Paragraph VIII of the Constitution of the State of Georgia and Section 21-2-544 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, a writ of election is hereby issued to the Secretary of State for a special election to be held on February 23, 2010, to fill the temporary vacancy in District 19 of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Paulding County SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center to Close October 30

According to the U. S. Small Business Association, the Disaster Loan Outreach Center located in Paulding County, Georgia will stop operations on Friday, October 30, at the close of the business day.

Get Ready - Atlanta Gas Light Approved to Add Recovery Fee

The Public Service Commission authorized Atlanta Gas Light to implement recovery for the STRIDE program. The initial charge, expected to begin in late October, will increase rates for all firm customers by an additional $0.39 per month. Beginning October 2010, the rates will be $0.78 per month, and beginning in October 2011, the rates will be $1.18 per month.

First Doses H1N1 Vaccine Should be in Georgia by Tuesday

It is expected the first doses of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine will be delivered to Georgia by Tuesday. These doses are to be used on school age children and will be the nasal mist vaccine.

Government Bans Federal Employees from Texting While on Business

Federal employees have been banned from texting while driving government vehicles, while using government equipment or on government business. The ban was signed by President Obama last night according to ABC news.

President Declares Federal Disaster for 4 Georgia Counties

According to the Governor's Office, President Obama has declared four counties in Georgia a federal disaster in the wake of the flooding earlier this week in the metro Atlanta area.

These counties are: Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas and Paulding.

Douglas County Closes Schools Tuesday and Wednesday

From the Douglas County School System:

All Douglas County Schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 22nd and 23rd. The closings are necessary due to road conditions including bridges and roads that are not usable and storm damage to water mains that prevents the water system from being able to maintain pressure and deliver water to schools and homes. A public health issue arises when schools are unable to flush toilets due to lack of water pressure and a boil water advisory prevents appropriate hand washing at sinks and makes food service preparation difficult.

A decision regarding potential additional closings will be made Wednesday after consultation with Public Safety and Water Authority Officials.

Make up dates will be determined at a later time.

Cobb County Middle Schools to Release Early due to Weather

Due to weather conditions and road closures that have occurred today, Monday, Sept. 21, all Cobb County middle schools will dismiss at 1:15 p.m. Elementary schools and high schools will dismiss at regular times.

For students in the after-school program, the after-school program will remain open until parents are able to pick up their children, but we encourage parents to do so as soon as possible. All athletic and extracurricular activities have been canceled.

The Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority has experienced numerous main breaks and water outages throughout the county, causing pressure to drop below 20 psi. As a precautionary measure, a boiled water notice has been issued at this time.
