Preparing the Generator for the Storm

We have been most fortunate over the past several years as Georgia has not seen an ice storm of any magnitude. All this could and will most likely change on Sunday night.

In the event you haven't dug out the old generator during these times of great winter weather, please do so today. It's a great sunny day and now is the time to see if it works. You may need to clean up the spark plug, check the oil and gas, and have plenty of time to tweak the all the parts. It's best to do it now rather than in the middle of the storm!

Be sure to have plenty of gasoline available for refilling the generator in the event you lose power.

Is it a Chill in the Air or is it the Flu?

The influenza virus has taken a big early leap into Georgia this season. According to the CDC, over 20% of patient samples tested in Georgia have been positive for the influenza virus. This is double the positive testing rate in the rest of the country.

The good news is the CDC is recommending all people over the age of 6 months receive an influenza vaccine this year. Supplies are ample so finding the vaccine should be as easy as going to the store. Be sure to check your local pharmacies for the vaccine.

Stay healthy and enjoy the holiday season.

Free Prescription Drug Card Program Set to Launch Today

/PRNewswire/ -- Program officials have confirmed that they will announce the official launch of the free statewide prescription assistance program at a news conference today in Atlanta. Georgia Drug Card is being launched to help the uninsured residents of Georgia afford their prescription medications.

Georgians can obtain prescription cards at various hospitals, clinics, and other card distribution sites that are being set up across Georgia. The Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) is working with the program to create additional locations. The cards are accepted at more than 50,000 pharmacies across the country. Anyone interested in learning more can visit www.georgiadrugcard.com.

The program is being touted as the answer for Georgia residents that find it difficult to navigate the confusing maze of prescription programs that have appeared in recent years. Georgia Drug Card is open to anyone living or working in Georgia regardless of age or income.

Youth Equine Champions Day planned for February in Atlanta

A herd of young equestrians will meet in Atlanta on February 10 for the second annual Youth Equine Champions Day.

The event will honor young people (19 and under) who qualified and participated in regional, national and world championship horse shows as well as Georgia State Champions. Georgia State Champions include all first-place winners in the Pony, 1-12 and 13-19 age groups from the Georgia Federation State Show.

Youth Equine Champions Day will begin at 10 a.m., Feb. 10, at the historic railroad Freight Depot at 65 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta. The Georgia Equine Commodity Commission is sponsoring the event.

Governor Perdue Issues Writ of Election for State House Seat

Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that he has issued a writ of special election to fill the vacancy of House District 19 due to the resignation of Rep. Glenn Richardson. Rep. Richardson submitted his letter this morning with an effective date of today, January 11.

The special election to fill the vacancy will be held February 23, 2010.

Qualifying dates will be set by the Secretary of State’s office. Below is the writ of election:

House District 19 has become vacant due to the resignation of Representative Glenn Richardson.

Therefore, pursuant to Article V, Section II, Paragraph VIII of the Constitution of the State of Georgia and Section 21-2-544 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, a writ of election is hereby issued to the Secretary of State for a special election to be held on February 23, 2010, to fill the temporary vacancy in District 19 of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Get Ready - Atlanta Gas Light Approved to Add Recovery Fee

The Public Service Commission authorized Atlanta Gas Light to implement recovery for the STRIDE program. The initial charge, expected to begin in late October, will increase rates for all firm customers by an additional $0.39 per month. Tamiflu, a drug often prescribed to treat flu-like symptoms, is typically available in two forms - capsule or liquid form. The liquid form is generally prescribed to children and adults unable to swallow the capsule form.

"Due to a heavy flu season and heightened awareness of flu-like symptoms, liquid Tamiflu is in short supply," said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. "The ability to compound Tamiflu for our pharmacy customers is just one example of our continued commitment to the health and wellness of the entire family this flu season. We remind our customers that the best defense of the flu is to plan ahead and have a flu vaccine administered at your local Publix Pharmacy."

There is no additional charge to compound Tamiflu and currently there is an ample supply of the capsule form needed to formulate the oral suspension.

Douglas County Closes Schools Tuesday and Wednesday

From the Douglas County School System:

All Douglas County Schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 22nd and 23rd. The closings are necessary due to road conditions including bridges and roads that are not usable and storm damage to water mains that prevents the water system from being able to maintain pressure and deliver water to schools and homes. A public health issue arises when schools are unable to flush toilets due to lack of water pressure and a boil water advisory prevents appropriate hand washing at sinks and makes food service preparation difficult.

A decision regarding potential additional closings will be made Wednesday after consultation with Public Safety and Water Authority Officials.

Make up dates will be determined at a later time.

If this is true, that will mean six days total. The teachers we have spoken to have indicated their furloughed pre-planning days just means they work for no pay as teachers must prepare their classrooms for upcoming parent visits.

Pano's and Paul's Closed? OK Cafe tidbit...

I went to dinner at the OK Cafe yesterday and was surprised, shocked, to see that Pano's and Paul's was gone... It's one of my favorite "very nice" places to eat.

I hated to think that the economy had taken down such a great restaurant.

Did a quick search this morning to see when it closed and was happy to find that it's only a temporary closing. They are moving to St. Regis Atlanta and will re-open later this year.

Quick note on the OK Cafe --- another of my favorite places! Excellent food, reasonable prices, great service. Found out yesterday that they were named after the OK Cafe in To Kill a Mockingbird. I've been eating there since forever, never knew that little tidbit. They opened in 1987. They're on Paces Ferry & Northside, north Atlanta off I-75. http://www.okcafe.com/

Even as the recession chips away at mental health services across the country, Georgia’s around-the-clock psychiatric hotline is finding a way to weather the storm — and other states are watching closely.

The Peach State’s Crisis and Access Line’s philosophy is simple: By making it easier and faster for patients to get the psychiatric care they need, states can address problems before they potentially lead to expensive hospitalizations and even incarcerations.

Fayette: Kimbo in "Drop Dead Diva"

There’s a new show coming to Lifetime TV called “Drop Dead Diva”. They shot parts of it at Starr’s Mill High School in Peachtree City. Fayette's own Kimbo Daniel was an extra and will be in episode # 7 (or whichever one is at the High School Reunion).

The show started July 12th.

Watch for Kimbo, she'll be dancing, walking, sitting and/or standing at tables - no speaking part. She's wearing a teal/aqua blue green wrap around her shoulders over a black top & skirt and has a bright medallion teal/aqua blue green necklace on.
